How Do You Know If You Have a Dental Emergency?
You can identify a dental emergency if your situation can’t wait for treatment, or if the pain is unmanageable even with over-the-counter medication. Some examples of a dental emergency would be:
- A broken or dislocated jaw
- A tooth that has been broken or knocked out
- A severe toothache
- Intense bleeding from your mouth
- Visible signs of infection or intense swelling
If you are experiencing any of these or another case that warrants immediate care, we urge you to call our emergency dentist.
How to Treat Your Dental Emergencies Immediately
When a dental emergency happens, you may wonder what you should do if a tooth has been knocked out, a jaw has been broken, or you have a severe toothache.
First, schedule an appointment with Pickens Family Dentistry. We understand that you cannot always get to an appointment immediately, so here are things you need to do to take care of a dental emergency at home.
Chipped Tooth
Keep the chipped pieces of your tooth, if possible. Store the pieces in your cheek or in a glass of milk. If you’re in pain, use an ice pack or over-the-counter pain medication. Call our office and we can patch up your tooth with some dental bonding or a veneer.
Broken Jaw
If your jaw has been broken or dislocated, the pain can be very intense. Do not speak or move your jaw. Avoid chewing or swallowing. Immediately after your jaw has been broken or dislocated, hold it shut so it does not move or cause you pain. Go directly to an emergency room at a hospital.
Lost or Knocked Out Tooth
If you are able to locate the tooth that has come out, immediately place it back where it belongs. If that does not work, keep it in your mouth. If you cannot hold it in your mouth, keep it in a glass of milk. Immediately contact our office. The quicker you treat a tooth that has been cracked, chipped, or fallen out, the more likely it is to look natural and remain strong.
Severe Toothache
Severe toothaches can happen for many reasons. Try taking over-the-counter pain medication to help with the swelling or pain. If that resolves the issue for a short amount of time, call us and schedule an appointment for the day of or the next day. If over-the-counter pain medication does not mitigate the pain, call for immediate emergency dental care.
If the toothache has been severe but randomly comes and goes that could indicate a major underlying issue or infection. Contact us for a next-day appointment for an exam and consultation.

Second-Opinion Experts
If you are struggling with an emergency or an intense procedure, we at Pickens Family Dentistry are second-opinion experts. We will help you weigh the pros and cons before you make a decision that can impact not just your smile but your quality of life.
Get a second opinion on any big dental procedure as well as during emergencies.
