Laser-assisted periodontal therapy, also known as LAPT, is a new, innovative, and safe gum disease treatment. LAPT uses a harmless laser to target areas that regular dental tools cannot reach, giving you a more efficient and pain-free experience.
We are excited to offer LAPT here in Vancouver, Washington. Schedule a consultation with us today to see if we can use LAPT to help your gum health concerns.
LAPT Instead of Surgery or Deep Cleaning
Why LAPT instead of traditional surgery or deep cleaning? LAPT helps us have the upper hand over your periodontal disease. Since the laser is detail-oriented and concentrated to a small point, we can treat the root of the problem quickly and efficiently.
The detail that LAPT allows us means we do not damage any gums that don’t need treatment, leaving them to take care of your teeth.
LAPT works on most kinds of periodontal concerns; you can trust it to treat your gums through a variety of issues. It also addresses the underlying issue, starting with your roots. Deep cleanings do not always address the underlying issue.
Benefits of LAPT
There are numerous benefits of LAPT with Pickens Family Dentistry. LAPT is a better solution to periodontal concerns because it is more precise and can reach areas that a dentist might not be able to on their own. Some other benefits of LAPT include:
- Quicker Recovery Times: Because the laser does not create large incisions, your teeth, and gums will be back to normal in a matter of days.
- Less Inflammation: Sometimes deep cleanings or gum surgery can cause inflammation for days afterward. LAPT prevents inflammation because it is quick and less damaging.
- Pain-Free Procedures: Dental lasers require less pain management because of how precise and quick they are.
- More Thorough Procedures: Our lasers can reach very small areas, meaning that the procedure is more effective at treating gum disease.
- Shorter Procedure Times: Because lasers target specific infected areas, the procedure is often quicker than a dental deep clean procedure.
Treatment of gingivitis and gum disease has improved drastically because of LAPT. If you are looking to treat your periodontal disease today, visit us in Vancouver, Washington for an appointment today.
The Procedure of LAPT—Tell Me More!
LAPT’s procedure is simpler than a regular periodontal surgery or gingivitis treatment. It often does not need a local anesthetic. LAPT works in conjunction with root planing and teeth scaling.
First, the dentist will use the laser to remove any infected or inflamed gum tissue. The laser helps the dentist get hard-to-reach spots and be very precise. After that, some minimal scaling and root planing will occur to make sure the infection does not return.
You will need a week or two to recover fully, but after this procedure, your gums should be back to new!
What Does LAPT Post Procedure Look Like?
After your LAPT procedure is done, we’ll send you home with a specific set of care instructions. It will probably include things like what to eat and what to avoid, how to carefully brush your teeth, and a prescription mouthwash with instructions for use.
To keep your mouth healthy and prevent the return of gum disease, make sure you follow the care instructions to the letter. This will let your mouth heal correctly and give your gums the protection they need to repel bacterial infections.

Is LAPT Painful?
One of the reasons dentists have moved to use LAPT is because it is much less painful than regular scaling and root planing. There may be slight pain or discomfort, but ideally, the procedure is as comfortable for you as possible. During your recovery, you may have slight aches or discomfort, which can be treated with over-the-counter pain medication.
